Kyoto Sanjo Radio Cafe (京都三条ラジオカフェ) is a community FM radio station broadcasting in Kyoto, Japan on 79.7 MHz. Launched in 2003, it was Japan's first NPO-operated radio station. The station aims to revitalize the Kyoto urban community by providing a platform for citizen participation and local information exchange.
History and Operation
Established by the NPO Kyoto Community Broadcasting, the station began operations on March 31, 2003. It operates under the concept of being a "radio cafe" - a place for people to gather, relax, and exchange information, much like European cafes.
Programming
The station features a diverse range of programs created by community members. Anyone can produce and broadcast a program by paying a usage fee, starting from 2,000 yen for a 3-minute slot. This unique system allows for a wide variety of content, reflecting the interests and expertise of Kyoto's citizens.
Community Involvement
Kyoto Sanjo Radio Cafe is supported by about 100 regular members who pay annual fees and participate in the station's management decisions. The station's programs are produced by various "program owners," including individuals, companies, organizations, and students.

The station covers parts of Kyoto City and surrounding areas, reaching a potential audience of about 1 million people across approximately 440,000 households.
