Freedom Radio 99.5 FM is the first independent indigenous FM radio station in northern Nigeria, based in Kano. Established in 2003, it operates under Film Laboratory and Production Services Limited. The station's vision is "to be an excellent Mouthpiece of the Citizenry for expression of their Views and protection of their Values."
Freedom Radio broadcasts primarily in Hausa language and has become a household name in its coverage area. It offers news, current affairs, and creative programming aimed at educating, entertaining, and informing listeners. The station has played a significant role in promoting freedom of expression, allowing dissenting views and opposition voices to be aired.
Key programs include "Inda Ranka," which addresses public grievances, and "Kowanne Gauta," which allows citizens to comment on policy and political matters. Freedom Radio has also been instrumental in mainstreaming modern Hausa music and providing a platform for Kannywood singers.
Over the years, Freedom Radio has expanded to include additional stations in Dutse, Kaduna, and a second station in Kano called Dala FM, forming the Freedom Radio Nigeria group.
