Mai FM is New Zealand's largest urban contemporary radio network, promoting Māori language and culture while broadcasting hip hop and R&B music. Based in Auckland, the station began broadcasting in July 1992 and is now available in twelve markets across the country. Mai FM targets listeners aged 15 to 34 and reaches an estimated 460,600 different listeners each week.
The station's history includes its origins as an iwi radio station run by Ngāti Whātua and Mai Media. In 2008, MediaWorks New Zealand acquired Mai FM, leading to significant programming and branding changes, as well as the creation of the Mai FM network.
Mai FM's current programming includes popular shows like:
- Mai Morning Crew (6am - 10am weekdays)
- Mai Days
- Mai Home Run (3pm - 7pm weekdays)
- Mai Nights (7pm - midnight weekdays)
One of the station's annual features is The Mai Hot 1000, a listener-voted countdown of the hottest tracks that runs over a three-week period.
Mai FM continues to be a prominent voice in New Zealand's radio landscape, blending urban music with elements of Māori culture and language.
