Thobela FM is one of the oldest radio stations of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). It was launched as Radio Bantu on June 1, 1960, and later renamed Radio Lebowa in 1962. In 1998, after South Africa's democratic transition, it adopted its current name Thobela FM, meaning "The beat goes on" in Northern Sotho.
Broadcasting primarily in Northern Sotho, Thobela FM serves the Sepedi-speaking community in South Africa. The station offers a mix of talk shows, news, current affairs, and music programming. Its format is 60% music and 40% talk, targeting listeners aged 16-49.
Thobela FM has evolved over the years, updating its image and slogan. In 2014, it changed its slogan to "Mošate Wa Tsebo Le Boithabišo" (The Palace of Knowledge and Entertainment). The station has received several awards, including "The Best Radio Station Award" in 2015.
With a listenership of over 3 million across South Africa and abroad, Thobela FM continues to be a significant voice for Northern Sotho speakers, providing news, entertainment, and cultural content tailored to its audience.
