Radio 3 is a Spanish public radio station operated by Radio Nacional de España (RNE), part of the state-owned public broadcaster RTVE. Launched in 1979, it is known for its focus on alternative and indie music, as well as cultural programming.
The station primarily broadcasts indie, alternative rock, electronic music, and hip-hop, but also features other genres like jazz, world music, flamenco, and heavy metal. Radio 3's programming is split between specialist music shows and cultural content, including literature, film, theater, and visual arts.
Radio 3 gives its hosts significant autonomy over content and does not use playlists, resulting in diverse and eclectic programming. Some of its popular shows include "Hoy empieza todo," "180 grados," and "Siglo 21."
As a public service broadcaster, Radio 3 aims to support innovative and emerging artists and cultural expressions. It attracts around half a million listeners per week, appealing to audiences interested in alternative music and culture outside the mainstream.
